2021.12.09 08:33 BrianEDenton The Belly of Paris - Concluding Thoughts

NB: Sorry for falling behind on this one. In order to better get caught back up I'm just going to drop my thoughts on the book as a whole here and ask for your comments. I won't let this happen again. We'll resume with chapter-by-chapter posts tomorrow with The Bright Side of Life.

Concluding Thoughts: In The Kill Émile Zola sets his story of the Parisian elite's tragicomic shenanigans amidst the chaotic raze and rumble of Haussmannization. The appetites of its characters feed on real estate speculation, personal betrayal and repeated quasi-incestual violations of traditional sexual mores. In The Belly of Paris, The Kill's distant cousin in Zola's Les Rougon-Macquart series, we find ourselves in the very bowels of Haussmann's project: Les Halles, a giant wholesale food market where the focus turns from the Parisian elite to the city's working class and aspiring bourgeoisie. Zola is smart enough a writer not to romanticize such characters, ascribing to them any angelic nobility derived from their poverty or inferior social position. Far from it. Instead, the same human appetites of The Kill here drive the poorer characters to similar bouts of depravity, betrayal, gossip, selfishness and violence. In the middle of it all is Florent Quenu, a political prisoner exiled by Napoleon III after the coup of '51. When Florent returns to Paris years later he and his emaciated body are soon swallowed by the all-ravaging insatiable gluttony of the people of Les Halles. It soon becomes clear that he shares with the market wares of Les Halles one of either two fates: the garbage heap or the outhouse.

Top quality, really liked this one.

2021.12.09 08:33 Waaswaa [WP] The key.

You are standing in the kitchen, with today's mail on the table, except for one envelope. As you open it, you see a hand written letter and a small bronze key. For some reason you do recognize the key, but for the love of God, you are not able to remember where the key goes.

2021.12.09 08:33 sanpedro12 Any Advice On How To Counteract Daytime Fatigue?

Hi there,
I really need your advice/experience:
In short:
3 years ago I took Parnate for crippling depression and social anxiety. Daytime Fatigue while on Parnate was so crippling that I had to discontinue. Since quitting my anxiety increased ten-fold with horrible symptoms I never experienced before. For this reason I consider trying out Nardil. The thing is I dont want to experience this crazy Daytime Fatigue again. Do you have any advice/experience on how to counteract it? Every comment is welcomed!

2021.12.09 08:33 Lysdexiic Memory leak issue in World of Dragons

Hi all, so I recently installed a mod called World of Dragons (I've tried both I and II) and when I start it, it works fine at first. However after about 5 minutes of playing, the world starts to lag more and more until it drops down to 1FPS. I've played many other mods that work just fine (RLCraft, Rouguelike Dungeons, DDSS etc), it's only in World of Dragons that this happens in. I've read that when this happens it's very likely a memory leak issue, but I have no idea on how to figure out exactly which mod is causing this. Anyone ever dealt with this or have any idea how to find out which mod is causing the problem?

2021.12.09 08:33 AerieHot5179 Has anyone phoned education support?

I’ve been feeling very anxious recently. This was all under control after counselling (paid for privately). But now it’s creeping up. Just wondering if anyone has phoned them and found it has helped? Can you get regular support through them or just a one off call?
